Ellipse and RMG announced as finalists for the 2025 Sports Technology Award

Ellipse, a leading sports data and analytics company, in partnership with Racecourse Media Group (RMG), has been announced as a finalist for the 2025 Sports Technology Awards.

The nomination for ‘Best Data and Analytics for Storytelling’ comes just over 12 months after the Ellipse and RMG partnership created RaceiQ, a revolutionary data proposition for the horse racing industry.

RaceiQ specialises in using complex modelled metrics to turn detailed GPS tracking data into easily digestible content for broadcasters, participants and racing fans alike. The suite of metrics has been developed by Ellipse’s data science and engineering specialists, combined with AI and machine learning.

RaceiQ has since become integral to Racing TV and ITV’s racing’s pre- and post-race analysis by creating informative and engaging content for all.

The project has three core objectives:

  • Deepen fan understanding: Traditionally, the analysis of races has relied on the interpretation of presenters and pundits. The introduction of RaceiQ allows complex data to be crunched into simple facts to demonstrate to the audience exactly how and why certain things happen within a race.
  • Offer compelling new narratives: By using these exciting new tools and insights, broadcasters can highlight where a race was won or lost and open up comparisons between horses like never before
  • Attract a new audience to racing: By demystifying horse performances and simplifying the way that racing data is presented, including in-race datapoints and graphics, RaceiQ has the ability to engage a wider, younger data-savvy audience.

Roderick Grafton, MD – Horse Racing at Ellipse, said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for such a prestigious award, having only launched RaceiQ just over a year ago. The positive comments we receive from both pundits and consumers illustrate the value of the RaceiQ metrics in providing brand new angles and insights to horse racing fans. This recognition is testament to the excellent work of our data scientists, analysts and engineers at Ellipse, as well as the talented team at RMG and Racing TV.”

Ed Gretton, Director of Racing at RMG, added: “We couldn’t be more pleased with the reaction to RaceiQ, which has really captured the imagination, thanks to its smooth integration into the ITV and Racing TV coverage. Not only is it revolutionising the way we interpret and perceive the sport it is ensuring those who like a bet are armed with all the essential insight that goes into how a horse might perform. This nomination is testament to all the hard work put in from the excellent team at Ellipse and our Racing TV production and presenter team.”

The 2025 Sports Technology Awards will take place at a spectacular, reimagined awards ceremony dubbed’ The Arena of Innovation’ on Wednesday, 23 April, at Evolution London.
